Kenyan authorities have finally agreed to postpone the much publicized Dadaab camp closure for some months, citing Somalia's readiness to receive the refugees.
However, it is apparent that the reason behind the postponement could be more than unreadiness or documentation.
Ever since Kenya announced Amina Mohammed's candidature for the top AU job, there has been laxity in addressing the refugee issue and closure of the Dadaab camps.
Much energy was directed to Amina's politics in light of the highly prestigious job, and this could be the main reason for the postponemnt. It is worth noting that Amina Mohammed, who is the country's foreign affairs cabinet secretary, was among the very vocal state officers advocating for the closure of the camp.
Furthermore, the fact that the Somalia nation was the first country to throw its support behind the Kenyan icon cannot be underestimated. This fact can be attributed to the 'do me I do you' sage and this could be the real factor for the sudden change of tune.
The fact that Kenya had cited security threats cannot fully account for the issue, given the recent attack in Mandera that happened in less that a fortnight after the announcement.
However, it is just a matter of time before Amina ascends to the top AU job or even concedes defeat if she fails to clinch the seat.
Similarly, it is also a couple of months before the postponement time lapses for us to ascertain if the camps will actually be shut or it was a game of politics.
