One cannot begin to understand what the refugees at the Dadaab and Kakuma Camps are feeling right now.
Having woken up one day and being told to go back to where they came from must be a nightmare.
The government through the Ministry of Internal Security, Immigration and Home Affairs said the refugees are to be repatriated back to their motherlands. The reason highlighted behind this is that peace has been restored in their countries and it is now safe for them to move back.
The country has been under attack from the dreaded Al-Shabaab militia group and the government has believed that refugees in the Dadaab Camp have been of help to the terrorists. The main question is 'Where do the refugees start from?' They will be required to build their lives from scratch and furthermore, the issue of their country being safe is relative.
The government should have come up with other means of solving the refugee crisis rather than repatriating them back to their countries without a solid plan. The government could have blocked further infiltration of the refugees and let those at the Dadaab Camp continue with their lives as a well-planned repatriation exercise is formulated.
