Julius Mwithalii, the Meru man who on Thursday made headlines after hanging onto Raila Odinga’s chopper as it took off has defended himself, saying he is a diehard supporter of the ODM leader.

Mwithalii was on Friday morning arrested at Murigenge, and is set to be charged with attempted suicide.

The incident happened on Thursday afternoon at Maili Tatu, when he decided to hang on to Odinga’s chopper as it took off.

While speaking to the media at Maua Police Station, Mwithalii, who seemed unperturbed said he wanted to go to Odinga’s home and hopefully secure a job.

He jumped off the chopper when it flew low at Athimba Primary School in Igembe South, about 15 kilometres from the Maili Tatu grounds.

"I am a staunch supporter of Mr Odinga, I had vowed that he could not leave me behind, I knew this was an opportunity to secure a job and even a chance to go back to school," said Mr Mwithalii, who wore an ODM-branded cap.

The Standard Four drop-out added that he comes from a poor background, and decided to Odinga’s visit as a chance to fly away from his problems.

"I have gone through a lot of problems and I believe Mr Odinga will come to my help, did I steal anyone's property," he posed

This is the second case in less than a year, after a similar incident in Bungoma, Western Kenya during the burial of businessman Jacob Juma.
