He is one of the most astute politicians in Nyanza today. Having represented Bondo constituency for close to two decades, Dr. Oburu Oginga has weathered political storm to cement his place in the region's history books.
To many, the first born son of Kenya's first Vice President Jaramogi Oginga Odinga has been riding on his family name to springboard his political ambitions. But that's not the case since Dr. Oburu's political journey has been long.
Between 1974 and 1979, the Russia-trained Economist served as a Councilor in the defunct Kisumu Municipal Council. But 20 years later, his political life would change forever after being elected Bondo MP, taking over from his father after the latter's death.
For the next 19 years, Dr. Oginga became virtually unbeatable even as his rivals struggled to dislodge him amid accusations that he had nothing to show for his time in office and that he was just a lucky man.
At the height of political success, he held the crucial post of assistant Minister in the Ministry of Finance in the grand coalition.
The politically strong Oginga went into the 2013 election keen to win his fifth consecutive term. However, his political miscalculation saw him disqualified by ODM in the nominations alongside his bitter rival for the gubernatorial seat, William Oduol.
He, however, managed to return to Parliament as a nominated MP. But he could not make a political comeback in 2017, losing to Gideon Ochanda in Bondo ODM nomination.
