The illegally imported sugar is very dangerous to human health from the reports Kebs. The sugar has higher quantities of metal than the acceptable levels that can be consumed by human.
One kilogram of sugar is supposed to have a maximum of two grams of copper if at all it is meant for human consumption. In contrary to the imported sugar that has 20.7 grams of metal per a kilogram. The sugar is allegedly said to have found its way into the borders of this country through some agents in connection with some top political figures.
"The copper that was detected was above the required levels identified by the Kebs standards, marking it unfit for consumption. This is twenty times more than the required levels in the consumable table sugar." said the Kebs managing Director Charles Ongwae.
Besides, it is said that the sugar has yeast and molds, polarisation and colour conductivity ash. This makes it unsuitable for consumption since it does not meet the standard specification.
Additionally, the presence of lead is very dangerous to young children because it could lead to decreased bone and muscle and damage to the nervous system and kidneys.
However, the testing has not proven any presence of mercury so far. Only copper and lead are so far the major components that have failed the sugar from satisfying the standards for consumption. This is according to the Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs).
