A man suspected of theft and handling of stolen goods took to his heels yesterday after jumping over the perimeter wall of the Limuru law court cells. The man, identified as Peter Ndungu, had been arrested in Tigoni and had just been taken at the Limuru law courts when he climbed the wall and ran, leaving police officers firing gunshots in the air. Limuru resident magistrate Nancy Makau said that there is need for the suspects to be taught that they remain innocent until proven guilty. “It is not a must that when you are brought before a magistrate that you are guilty. As a suspect you have a chance to tell the side of your story the best way you know how,” Makau said. The magistrate opined that if the suspect stayed around until his case was heard and determined, maybe he could have been found innocent but now he could face an extra charge of escaping from the court while still under police custody. In the meantime, the police have said that they are not going to rest until the suspect is apprehended again. They have now appealed to the residents of Redhill and Tigoni, where the man was arrested, to provide any information they may have that may lead to his arrest.
