Mwangangi was speaking on Tuesday in Ndalani Primary School, Yatta Sub-county in Machakos County, during an annual meeting with education officers and teachers from the sub-county.

“The quality of education in public primary schools needs to be improved so that the mean score of the pupils who seat for the National exams can go up,” said Mwangangi.

“This has been stagnant as the mean score of KCPE in Ndalani zone in 2014 does not reflect any big improvements compared to the previous years. The quality of public schools is poor and this is reflected on the performance of pupils in these schools compared to the private schools that are performing really well,” added Mwangangi.

The MP further promised to award the top 15 pupils in 2014 KCPE in Ndalani zone with Sh5,000 each, to help them during the ongoing preparations of joining form one.

Most officials deliberated on upgrading of the mean score, through the teachers and students who were urged to put in more effort and ensure that the school environment is learner-friendly.

Yatta Knut secretary Michael Ngui, who was also present, insisted that the Union was ready to receive the teachers’ complaints and would resolve them fairly.

He also congratulated the teachers from schools that performed well in 2014 national exams.

The education officials who also attended the annual meeting in Ndalani zone were, Yatta Sub-county director of education, zonal tac-tutor, zonal Knut Secretary and one official representing teachers living with HIV/AIDS in the County.
