If you take a tour of Athi River town with an intention of finding a stadium, you will be greatly disappointed. In fact, what we have in Athi River town as “stadia” are just playing grounds or playing fields. The notable playing fields are; Makadara “Stadium”, KMC playing field, Site playing field and Railways “Stadium.”

The only thing that will lift your spirit is the number of youths engaging in sports, especially Football and volleyball. Every evening, you will not miss to find at least three groups of energetic and dedicated youths playing football in what usually seem as rehearsal sessions in preparation for upcoming tournaments.

The Machakos County Government upgraded Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos town to International standards. Governor Alfred Mutua has promised to construct more stadia during his second term. If he will not renegade on his promises, well and good. If he will leave office without constructing at least one standardized stadium in Athi River town, the youths will not forgive him.

Without a stadium, all the efforts being put in by the eager youths will go to waste. A stadium will not only motivate the football clubs to continue their work with zeal but it will also attract many other youths who are lying idle in the estates. A fully functional stadium will also provide jobs to Athi River youths and generate revenue to the County.
