Cord leader Raila Odinga has told President Uhuru Kenyatta to forget about a competitive 2017 General Election if his calls to reconstitute the current IEBC go unheeded.
Speaking to BBC in a recent interview, Raila vowed not to participate in an election conducted by Isaak Hassan-led-IEBC whom he accuses of being openly biased and mismanaging 2013 polls. "We cannot stay put because then there will be no elections. So, we are saying that we need to have elections, and must be elections that all of us will have confidence in and where the field is level," said Raila.
He asserted that Cord protests will go on every Monday until all the current IEBC commissioners are out of office and President Uhuru-led government agrees to talks.
"We will continue with our demos every Monday and you will see us there on the streets until they agree to talk to us. The current IEBC commissioners must go," he added.
Raila has insisted that the next commissioners must be agreed upon by both Cord and Jubilee coalitions.
"We will agree on replacements of the current commissioners. We want both sides to propose names of men and women of integrity to preside over 2017 elections," demanded Raila.
However, President Uhuru Kenyatta has categorically stated that there will be no 'shortcuts' in reconstituting the current electoral body saying that the laid down constitutional procedure must be followed.
"Agreeing to their (Cord) proposal will amount to me breaching the same constitution I swore to protect when I took the oath of office as President," Uhuru said during a Presidential tour in North Eastern region last week.
