Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi has said that there is a clear indication the government is not ready for free and fair elections in 2017.

Mudavadi spoke on Saturday at a fundraiser for Lwandanyi Primary School in Sirisia Constituency in Bungoma County, claiming that the Jubilee administration is planning to postpone next year’s General Election.

The ANC leader slammed the move by the selection panel of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to cancel names of shortlisted candidates for the post of IEBC chairperson.

“The game of musical chairs on appointment of new commissioners is a hidden scheme to scuttle next year’s polls. There is something fishy going on between IEBC and the government,” said Mudavadi.

He however said has no issue with the re-advertisement of the chairperson’s post, saying  it is for the good of the country if at all they only select people of integrity.

“I agree with the select committee on their decision to re-advertise if they feel the candidates are not suitable. We need a balance between meeting the timelines and ensuring we get credible people to oversee the elections,” he said.

Mudavadi further pointed out that there is every reason to believe the electoral body is working under the senior government officials’ instructions and warned that any attempt to postpone the election from August 8, 2017 won’t be entertained.
