Dismas Mokua, a political analyst, has said the fate of the next Mombasa governor lies in the hands of two politicians.
Speaking during an interview on KTN on Saturday, Mokua said top politicians from Wiper and ODM have the power to decide whether the county remains in the opposition or is snatched by Jubilee, which is also eying the gubernatorial seat.
Mokua said the two parties enjoy massive support in the county, adding that their leaders, Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka have the ability to influence the election outcome.
He, however, said Mombasa is a very important asset to the opposition, adding that Cord leaders will fight hard to ensure the Port city remains their stronghold.
''Mombasa is a very important city which boththe ruling and opposition coalitions would like to have control of. Both Wiper and ODM are interested in the post and the party leaders are aware that if they fail to agree on fronting a common candidate, then Jubilee's Suleiman Shahbal wil comfortably take over the county. Therefore, they are likely to hold a closed door meeting and decide on a single candidate,” said Mokua.
''It is highly probable that Raila will convince Wiper to support Joho because he has been a very vocal and important asset in the opposition,” he added.
Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar and Nyali MP Hezron Awiti both of Wiper, have announced their bid to challenge ODM's Hassan Joho who will be seeking re-election come August.
