Rhonda residents are still in shock after a gang of thieves struck the area on the eve of the New Year and made away with household valuables.

The residents claim that the thugs took advantage of their absence to attend night vigils to usher in 2016 to steal from them.

Joseph Njagi, who lost a television set, a gas cylinder and jerrycans, said he had gone to a church a few kilometres from the plot but was dumbstruck to find his door wide open when he returned.

Steve Biko, who lost his sub-woofer, however, could not rule out an inside job as he suspected that one of his neighbours could be working in cahoots with the criminals.

The robbers also dismantled wooden stalls before carting away the pieces of wood.

The residents urged the police to boost night patrols in the area to stem such incidences.
