Speaking on Wednesday at the Thika Stadium during the Madaraka Day celebrations, Anjere stated that the government will act tough on anyone who engages in illicit brew trade.

“People who think that they can restart illicit brew trade here in Thika should think twice because we are going to act on them toughly,” he warned.

Anjere appealed to residents to volunteer information on the people they suspect are brewing illicit brews, saying they have developed an SMS platform for residents to use when reporting illicit brew cases and other crime cases.

“Locals should utilise the free SMS (22068) platform we have developed to give us information,” he said.

The Thika DCC noted that illicit brewing remains illegal and that anyone who engages in it will be arrested and prosecuted.

Thika is cited by National Campaign against Drug Abuse (Nacada) as areas with high cases of illicit brewing in Kiambu.

Last year in July, President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered a countrywide crackdown on illicit brewers, an exercise that was largely successful.
