Thika West sub-county Agricultural Officer John Nyaga has said that ecological farming makes the best use of locally available inputs, and thus a climate mitigation and adaptation strategy.

"Evidence has shown that farmers who use ecological farming which includes practices like agro-forestry, sustainable land management, water harvesting and organic farming have increased yields especially in this county," said Nyaga in his Thika office on Tuesday.

He observed that this type of farming had the ability to provide enough nutrients to the soil for crop growth without the need for chemical fertilizers.

Nyaga also noted that organic fertilisers were cheaper alternatives that were locally available which made ecological farming more secure and sustainable.

"The use of organic supplements helps up in building up natural soil fertility and growing more food with fewer external inputs. This will help our farmers to feed the growing sub-county and county population in general," Nyaga added.

The agricultural officer said that the county government focus on extension services was making ecological farming a reality and, therefore, asked more farmers to embrace it.
