Speaking in her office on Tuesday, Ms Muthoni said that the only thing remaining on the road is to lay the tarmac, which will not take long.

"We expect that by the end of this month (February), construction will be complete and it will be opened up for vehicles leaving Thika town. They will no longer use the long diversion they have been using. The road will now be a dual-carriage and things are headed for the better as the road will go a long way in easing traffic in and out of town," she said.

Currently, only vehicles coming into Thika town use a section of the road.

Ms Muthoni said that the contractor had not taken long to complete the road, adding that the project had been planned to take two years but the county government was working closely with the contractor to hasten the work.

"The construction started in May 2015 and was expected to be complete around the same time in 2017. The notion by many residents that the contractor was taking too long to complete the work or some critics trying to bring politics in the project is totally wrong.

Good roads take time to construct and the locals will like the road once it is complete and traffic congestion will be a thing of the past in this town," she said.
