Handing over the equipment on Tuesday, the County Executive Member for Health Dr Jonah Mwangi said that the equipment are to be fixed in the next one month so that the morgue is operational before the official launching scheduled for October 5 this year.

He said the state of the art facilities purchased from Germany will see the morgue capacity increased from the current 24 to 120.

The facility is currently serving as the referral centre for the region.

Speaking after receiving the equipment, the Hospital Superintendent Dr Jacob Andrew Toro, said Thika level 5 Hospital has a catchment area of over 1.5 million people and will also serve as a training institution for pioneer medical students from Mount Kenya Univesrity (MKU) who will enrol this month for Medicine and surgery Degrees.

He pointed out that with a pathologist, Dr Josephine Muthami already in place, the morgue and anatomy lab would be run professionally and be one of the best in the region.

Currently it has a bed capacity of 264 and operates an outpatient department consisting of pharmacy, dental unit, physiotherapy, general outpatient, comprehensive, eye clinic, specialist services, diabetic clinic and reproductive health unit.

In August 2012, Mount Kenya University and the then Ministry of Medical Services signed a MOU to jointly upgrade the medical facility in a public private partnership venture.
