Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) living in Thika have a reason to smile after the government gave them 50,000 shillings as compensation for the ordeal they suffered during the 2007/2008 post-election violence. The IDPs have been living in Kiganjo, Kiandutu and Athena villages in Thika where they were absorbed by the locals.
It has been 11 years since the post-election violence and scores of these IDPs have been living in abject poverty.''We want to express our deepest gratitude to the government for compensating. We have been given 50,000 shillings and we were almost losing hope,'' Alice Wamuyu says.About 103 victims received the 50,000 shillings compensation.
