The IDP's through Kianjau Welfare IDP Group leadership confirmed that some of their members were compensated with Sh50,000 each, towards the end of 2017.

The government through the county administrators compensated the IDPs after finalising the audit of the integrated IDPs living around Thika especially in Kiandutu slums.

Dr Susan Gitau of International Professional Counselors Centre (IPCC), one of the institutions which have been spearheading counselling and therapy sessions for the IDP's, expressed her gratitude following the compensation.

"Today I'm all smiling because the government has honoured IDPs living in Thika with each Sh50,000. My heart is full of joy because I have been with these people since 2008 begging for food, clothes, school fees among other things. Even though the amount of money may appear small, it's my hope it will go a long in helping out those who have received it, as we continue appealing on the state to expedite the disbursement of the remaining amount," Gitau is quoted by Thika Today as saying.

There has been delayed disbursement of funds earmarked for compensating IDPs living in Thika.

"Although my colleagues have received the Sh50,000, we are yet to receive anything. I and others followed the matter via Kianjau Welfare IDP Group only to be told that our names were missing from the original list," Hannah Wanjiru, one of the IDPs who is yet to receive her compensation said on Saturday.

Thika has 640 registered households under the integrated IDP programme accommodated in cheap rental houses in the slums and people's homes across the sub-county.
