Thika MP Alice Ng’ang’a has applauded the move by Tuk-tuk operators in the area to form their own Sacco to comply with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) regulations.

Ng’ang’a said that the NTSA gazetted rules that require all public transport vehicles to belong to a Sacco that has at least 30 vehicles and they should employ drivers and conductors on permanent terms and offer them a retirement benefits arrangement.

"The Sacco will create employment for a number of people. They should not be mistreated as they will contribute to the success of the Sacco and growth in incomes of members," she said.

This comes after the Tuk-tuk operators met at the Starehe Grounds (Batuu) in Thika to deliberate the need of forming a Sacco on Thursday by upgrading their self help group into a Sacco which they said would be more viable.

The lawmaker who was speaking at Kithimani in Thika on Friday said that the Sacco will enable them invest and have more access to loans and also contribute to reduction in unemployment.

She has expressed her concerns with increased cases of crime in the region attributing it to unemployment, while urging the county government of Kiambu to initiate job-creation measures.
