Thika town commercial sex workers will be flashed out of the streets in few days to come, Thika DCC Tom Anjere has said.

Speaking at Thika Sub-county Stadium where he led the Madaraka Day celebrations on Wednesday, Anjere said that it was shameful even for the society to condone prostitution as a way of earning a living.

“These are our sisters, daughters or even mothers whom we have simply allowed to ruin their lives in the guise of earning a living,” said Anjere.

"This has to stop and we should feel shameful that we have allowed it to continue that long. We need to find ways to help them get alternative means of living but they must leave the streets first,” he added.

Anjere said that he was going to work with corporates through their Corporate Social Responsibility and various stakeholders to see how the 'twilight' girls can be helped out.

The DCC initiated a similar programme targeting street kids a month ago which has seen a number of them rehabilitated.

The Madaraka event was, however, boycotted by all the elected representatives in the sub-county though Governor William Kabogo and Thika Town MP Alice Ng'ang'a sent representatives.
