Speaking on Wednesday in his Thika office in reference to the recent quarry accident in Meru County that left a number of quarry workers dead, Thika West Deputy County Commissioner Jeremiah Gicheru, said that the Meru accident should serve as a warning to Thika quarry workers.

"I urge the quarry workers to prioritise their lives. Let them go to the quarry sites when the weather is favourable and safe for excavation activities,” said Gicheru.

He discouraged those working in the low lying areas near rivers against using explosives during the rains saying it may trigger landslides.

Gicheru also called on quarry owners with quarries near people's homes to fence them to protect residents from accidents or even deaths.

"A number of quarries are near people's homes or farms. Such quarries pose a danger especially to kids who are about to go on holiday. The owners should fence such areas,” he said.
