More than 3, 410 national Identity Cards are lying uncollected in Thika registrar of person’s office even as Kenyans get ready to vote in the coming General Elections.
According to the Thika registrar of persons Jacob Kang’utu, they have been receiving complaints from various leaders who allege that there is a delay in issuing of Identity Cards.
Kang’utu revealed that they have numerous ID cards lying in their offices and have already notified their owners of the completion of the processing, but insisted that no one has turned up to collect the cards.
“We have checked the waiting card numbers that have been sent in by those complaining and have found that almost 100 per cent of those cards are ready for collection. I wonder how people live without ID cards,” he said on Wednesday.
“It seems most of the people complaining have not bothered to go pick up their cards at the issuing stations. We call upon the leaders who will come out very soon begging for votes to join in sensitizing the residents of this area to collect their id cards,” he added.
He also stated that there has been a boom in the application and registration of identity cards in the area as they have recently received over 100 per cent increase in number of applications, and added that the surge in registration can be attributed to the fast approachin General Elections.
“I think it is sad that some politicians will even take advantage of the situation to say that some cards are being withheld deliberately by the government, but we assure you that we have the ids ready for picking but lying in our offices," he added.
