Thika West Sub-county residents have been urged to grow and eat red bananas in plenty for the nutritional benefits attached to them.
Speaking from her office at Thika Level Five Hospital on Tuesday, Jane Macharia, a nutritionist at the facility, said that red bananas are rich in fibres, Potassium and Vitamin C in comparison to yellow bananas.
"I have noted that red bananas are increasingly being sold in fruit kiosks around Thika Town. These are fruits I would highly recommend to residents to eat and even grow in their farms," said Macharia.
She said that five red bananas a day are capable of providing the body's daily need of dietary fibre, Vitamin C and Potassium all at once.
"Dietary fibre is essential for digestive system, Potassium is important for proper functioning of muscles and heart while Vitamin C reduces the chances of heart diseases and cancer. All these benefits can be found in a red banana," she added.
The nutritionist noted that red bananas are tasty, softer and also have Vitamin D and B6 more than the ordinary yellow bananas.
