[Photo|Thika-Kiambu Politics/Facebook]Several Thika town residents and businesspeople have reported the loss of property amounting to millions of shillings following flashfloods that continue to hit several parts of the industrial town.On Monday, many businesses in Kiandutu, Kiganjo, Makongeni, Kisii, Landless and Gatuanyaga estates remained closed as many places were flooded with rainwater which many residents suspect is mixed with raw sewage from the burst sewer tunnels."We estimate that more than 20,000 people have been affected by the floods that continue to wreak havoc especially among residents in the low-lying estates.""From vehicles, livestock to household property, none has been spared by this rain," Makongeni Chief Daniel Waiguru said on Monday while advising residents to be cautious especially parents with young children on holiday, and drunkards who go home late at night.A majority of the roads especially those leading to estates are currently impassable and residents are finding it hard to access their houses."We are currently charging relatively high fares because many estates are currently inaccessible even with these motorbikes," Samuel Muhia who ferries from Makongeni BAT stage to Kiganjo said.Residents continue to appeal to the county administration to solve the drainage problem, which they say continue to be the major cause of heavy flooding more so in the residential areas."The reason why this place gets flooded every rainy season is that the drainages and water channels are being blocked with refuse. In a case like here it is even worse because the contractor who is doing the by-pass near Kiang’ombe area continue to silt the water trenches with impunity," Joash Thiong'o said.
