Residents of Thika have called for quick repainting of zebra crossing points in the highway cutting across the town to prevent road accidents.
The residents said the faded markings on the road are more of imaginary crossing points that leave pedestrians at the mercy of motorists.
A spot-check by our reporter revealed that zebra crossing points along the Kenyatta highway and General Kago road are not visible to both motorists and pedestrians.
Residents and the business community have appealed to the county government to make sure that the zebra crossing spots are repainted to enable them work and cross the road with no fear of being hurt or even losing their lives.
Loise Nyambura, a businesswoman in the town, said she always dreads crossing the road.
“I do fear crossing the road in some spots like the one near the police station because its imaginary and one can easily be knocked down by a vehicle,” she said.
“So I prefer going to cross from where there are at least some signs of a zebra crossing spot.”
The Kiambu County executive board member for roads, Njeri Gatabaki, assured residents that the matter will be addressed “very soon”.
“We have noted the problem being addressed by the residents and we are in the process of solving it since we all care for the wellbeing of residents in this town and very soon you will note the difference,” the county minister assured residents.
She also revealed that the points the residents cited were not the only zebra crossing spots.
“There are many other zebra crossing points that people don’t know whether they exist and we will paint them when we will be repainting the others. Residents should be patient and we are glad that they are helping us cope with the challenges we are facing as the county since they are also directly involved in the running of the sub-county,” she said.
