Hawkers in Thika Town have asked the County Government of Kiambu to protect them from county askaris' harassment saying that last year the askaris were brutal and hard on them.

The hawkers have also requested to be allowed to do their business freely in the town especially at night without harassment.

"For the good part of 2015, we engaged in cat and mouse games with the county askaris in the town because we could not agree on one issue or another. This year we need to understand each other," said John Musyoka, a hawker at Thika main matatu stage on Monday.

Victor Ngaruiya said: "We have families that are dependent on us and throwing us outside the streets every now and then isn't the solution. We are ready to dialogue every time there's a problem."

Others want the county government to build shades and allocate them at an affordable fee.

"If we could get a place where we could rent shades at affordable fee we would be happy. We also get tired walking all day carrying our items," said Paul Njuru.

Alternatively, the hawkers have suggested that the county government allow them to operate in some selected streets where their businesses seem to thrive well.
