Thika town residents will have an uninterrupted water supply at their homes once a Sh.400 million water project is completed, Kiambu Water CEC Esther Njuguna has said.
Njuguna has said that the county government has been working hard to ease water shortage in the town occasioned by soaring population since the completion of Thika Superhighway.
Speaking during a public consultative meeting by Thika Water and Sewerage Company (THIWASCO) on Thursday, Njuguna noted that there was a need to increase the water supply to cater for the increased number of residents.
“We are embarking on a Sh400 million pipeline from Kairi area to Mary Hill where we have a tank that doesn’t have water. We will then do a treatment work there that can be able to supply people in Ngoigwa and its surroundings,” said Njuguna.
The CEC said that they are going to use gravity to supply water from the tank to water consumers in Ngoingwa, noting that it was cheaper and easy to maintain.
“We have a proposal to do a dam in Gatundu North at Karimenu area to ease water shortage in some sections of Thika town,” she said.
Njuguna further revealed that THIWASCO has applied to have a tariff review noting that it has the lowest tariffs compared to other water companies in the county and cannot be able to carry out any development projects.
“The company needs to increase the water supply to the residents, and that is why they have applied to the regulator (Water Service Regulatory Board) to be able to increase the tariffs and raise funds to undertake the projects,” Njuguna said.
