A plan by the Kiambu County government to consolidate the seven water companies in the county into one has met stiff opposition.

The residents and the business community in Thika have opposed plans by Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu to dissolve the water and sewerage companies.

Thika District Business Association chairman Alfred Wanyoike said the county should instead expand the capacity of the existing firms by putting up dams to increase water supply.

Wanyoike further said that the county government did not invite Thika residents for public participation when making the decision on the matter.

He added that the residents of Kiambu County have a constitutional right to give their views on matters that will affect them.

“Instead of planning how to centralise the water companies, the county should think of putting up dams to increase water supply and supplement the current services,” Wanyoike said as quoted by the Daily Nation.

Thika residents have threatened to move to court to challenge the plan saying the county government has failed to consider the opinions of the area residents.

Governor Waititu had announced plans to establish one major water company to enhance efficiency in service delivery and to also enhance access to clean water by all residents.

The governor wants Thika, Gatundu, Githunguri, Kiambu, Karuri, Kikuyu, Ruiru-Juja, Limuru Water and Karimenu merged to form Kiambu Water and Sewerage Company.
