The business community in Thika Sub-County has been told to be cautious of people masquerading as Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officers extorting money from traders.
The KRA Thika branch Manager Mr Daniel Ngugi said that he had information that some traders in the area were conned money by some people who presented themselves as KRA staff and were demanding money from traders to ‘assist’ them in income tax issues.
Ngugi, who was speaking on Thursday during the Thika District Business Association (TDBA) trade fair launch at Mama Ngina gardens in Thika town, advised the traders to demand identification documents from people who present themselves as KRA staff before they transact any business concerned with KRA matters.
He said that if traders doubted such officers, they should ask for verification from KRA offices or even report to police officers.
The manager said that such people were tarnishing the image of the organisation saying that if arrested they will be taken to court.
He called on traders to pay their taxes promptly so that the government could get resources to undertake its development programmes and avoid being blacklisted by the KRA and riks their property being auctioned.
He however confirmed that they earlier on apprehended four men faking to be KRA officials.
