Ms. Sophia Abdi Noor made history during the August 2017 General Election by becoming the first woman MP from Northern Kenya to be elected to the National Assembly.
Ms. Noor is known for consistently fighting to put the women of Ijara in Garissa County on the map in various ways.
The Ijara MP is a founder member of ‘Womankind Kenya’, a group that advocates for girls education and women issues.
She has dedicated her life to fighting for the rights of women and the marginalized in the Northern region of Kenya through gender equality campaigns.
She was one of the few women in her community to receive a high school degree and attend college to train to be a public school teacher.
Ms Noor has a Master’s Degree in Management and Organizational Management and a Bachelor of Arts in Community Development Studies from Kimmmage Development Studies Centre in Ireland.
She made her debut in politics by contesting in Ijara parliamentary seat in 1997 but lost to Mohamed Dahir Weyrah.
She vied again in 2013 on a URP ticket but again lost to Ahmed Ibrahim Abass.
