The Oscar award in that category went to The Silent Child, during the award’s 90th ceremony held on Sunday night at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

The film was inspired by the December 21, 2015, attack on a bus by Al-Shabaab militants that left two people dead.

The film is based on real-life events where a Muslim man led fellow Muslim passengers in shielding their Christian colleagues from being shot by Al-Shabaab militants.

During the attack, Mr. Salah Farah, a Muslim passenger, confronted the militants when they separated Christian passengers to shoot them.

Mr. Farah and other Muslims on board the bus asked the militants to kill everyone or leave them regardless of their religion.

Unfortunately, Mr. Farah was shot and injured as he argued with the militants and he died while receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital.

A schoolboy and a man who attempted to escape were also shot during the incident.

The Al-Shabaab militants later allowed the bus to proceed to Mandera.

The 23-minute long film is directed by Katja Benrath and Tobias Rosen and written by Brian Munene.
