Hate speech and more hate speech has been the order of the day over the past few days and weeks. Leaders with unbridled tongues and equally 'poisoned' subjects as exhibited on social media conversations have threatened the thin national fabric in the run-up to 2017 General elections.
If this hate is not contained early, pundits and experts have warned, our dear country could be headed south. The question, therefore is, how do we curb hate speech going forward?
1. Make strong anti-hate speech laws. Lack of strong anti-hate speech laws, analysts and legal experts have said, is the key reason hate speech mongers feel undeterred. They will continue to say what they want say and get away with it as long as anti-hate speech laws remain weak.
2. National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) must avoid knee-jerk reactions. NCIC has severally been accused of this because to many, it looks like the commission doesn't know its work. It waits for hate mongers to gain national prominence before rushing to pick one Jubilee hate monger here and another Cord hate monger there. The good NCIC then calls for a press conference to issue 'strong' and empty threats. This doesn't, won't and can't work!
3. Blackout by mainstream media. The reason why the hate mongers have gained notoriety and prominence, it is because mainstream media has given them a platform to spew venom. The mainstream media must not wait the social media to form their agenda. Argument that this is 'damn it if you do, damn it if you don't' must not be used by the mainstream media to justify their focus on hate mongers.
Statistics show that not more than 4.5 million Kenyans are on social media. So, the mainstream media can spare the other 36 million Kenyans this 'bile'.
4. Kenyans must stop celebrating war mongers and calling them 'heroes'. This is nonsense, ridiculous, uncalled for and more so stupid! Yes, it must be called by what it is.
If the eight MPs currently in custody for hate speech are heroes, what becomes of our unrelenting Kenyan athletes, our ever-winning rugby team, our patriotic KDF soldiers in Somalia to name but a few?
