Kenya's principal public debt threatens to hit Sh5 trillion by the end of this year, having moved from Sh3.82 trillion in December 2016 to some Sh4.4 trillion as at last month.
Central Bank of Kenya has put the country's domestic debt at Sh2.118 trillion as at last month with the external debt soaring to Sh2.294 trillion in June.
The government's average borrowing is at Sh86 billion per month this year compared to the Sh55 billion in 2015 and Sh54 billion monthly last year.
This means that if the country has to settle all its debts, every Kenyan will have to part with Sh97 000.
The figures show that every Kenyan owes the Sh97,000 computed against an average population of 45 million people basing on the latest economic survey conducted by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics.
