The American presidential elections that was finally won by Donald Trump treated majority of Kenyans to a rude shock. The race was widely predicted to favour Hillary Clinton, who had apparently been endorsed by the outgoing Barack Obama.
In Garissa Township, the legislative race has been presumed to be a battle between Farah Maalim and Aden Duale. For this case, Maalim may be considered as the Trump while the incumbent Duale may be addressed as Garissa's Clinton.
That President Kenyatta supports Duale is no lie. It is similarly true to say that a greater section of Garissa electorate are in favour of him.
But going by the latest scenes in the Township constituency, Maalim is steadily gaining last minute popularity, a fact that could earn him landslide victory just like Trump.
America's Hillary was highly favoured by the press because she had government support. As is the case in the North Eastern county, Duale has unlimited government support and even some backing from a section of the media.
It might not be the same scenario that will be witnessed next year, but who knows, Maalim might pull a surprise like Trump did against Clinton, who was a clear favourite.
