It is estimated that NCPB owes farmers in the North Rift over Sh3 billion for the maize already delivered.

"We have released Sh1 billion to pay farmers who delivered their maize from next week. We have also taken the supplementary budget to Parliament on the same which once approved farmers will smile all the way to the bank," said Kiunjuri at the Eldoret NCPB depot, Wednesday.

Farmers recently protested over the delay in releasing payment for the maize delivered to the board since last year.

The government had allocated over Sh7 billion that was to be used to pay farmers who deliver maize at the NCPB.

A 90-kilogram bag of maize was being purchased at SH3,200.

"70 percent of farmers who delivered their maize at NCPB has been paid we will ensure that the remaining 30 percent is paid promptly once the funds are availed to us,” said Kiunjuri.
