[Photo/ The Star]University of Nairobi don Patrick Asingo has said that corruption is rife in Kenya because there were less risks for those involved.Asingo has also attributed corruption surge to lack of political goodwill, bureaucratic red tape and conflict of interests. This is as he reminded the country that preliminary findings of research on corruption, have found that incompetent people have been appointed to key positions, allowing looters to exploit opportunities to engage in graft.“At times, there is a deliberate move to appoint those with the baggage so that when they want to do the right thing, they are reminded how they were not the best option,” Asingo said on Thursday during People’s Anti-Corruption Summit in Nairobi, the Star quotes him.He noted that governance institutions had failed to punish those implicated in graft as he called for sincere commitment to fight the war on corruption.“There is need to profile and classify corruption and those involved in the embezzlement of public resources as ‘thieves’ who deserve societal ignominy and dishonour,” Asingo said. This comes in as former NYS Director Dr Nelson Githinji was freed on Wednesday after a Milimani court quashed his prosecution over abuse of office after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) applied to withdraw his case.Githinji had been accused among other things, of using Sh497,000 public funds to service his private vehicleThe summit was organised by the Kenya Human Rights Commission to commemorate International Anti-Corruption Day.
