Speaking during an interview with the Standard, the MP said he also wanted to become a voice for the poor.

“The less fortunate members should be cushioned from the vagaries of life in these difficult economic times. I ventured into politics to be a voice of the poor and improve their lives,” he said.

He said there is need for Kenyans, himself included, to ensure that their taxes are well utilized for the benefit of the entire society.

The gubernatorial aspirant said he has the capability to solve the economic problems in Mombasa, and restore the county’s lost glory.

“Properly running this county has been part of my calculations; therefore I know what I am doing. This county needs someone who understands investment like myself to stimulate the economy and reclaim its glory as a trading powerhouse in the region,” he said.

Awiti has been at the forefront of criticising the incumbent, Governor Hassan Joho over poor management of the county.
