Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua has said that an impeachment motion tabled against him affected his intentions to appear before the Public Accounts Committee.
Speaking when he appeared before the committee, the governor was asked to apologize for snubbing the parliamentary watchdog in order to shed more light on his government’s pending bills.
The outspoken governor was expected to honor calls to appear before the committee under the chairmanship of Kisumu Senator Anyang’ Nyong’o to explain audit queries in the county’s 2013-14 audit reports.
Mutua absolved himself from failing to appear before the committee saying the reason behind this “was occasioned by an earthquake orchestrated by MCAs seeking to impeach me.”
Mutua pointed out that he could appear before the senate at the same time the county assembly was pushing for his impeachment.
“I didn’t refuse to appear before this committee. It fell on a date when things were tough for us in Machakos. This committee plays a critical role and we must be held to account,” Mutua said, as quoted by the Star.
Members Hassan Omar (Mombasa), Boni Khalwale (Kakakemga) and Martha Wangari (nominated) faulted the governor for disobeying summons by the committee.
This comes a few days after the motion to impeach him flopped because of the lack of quorum.
