[Photo|Capital FM]Nyeri Deputy Governor Mutahi Kahiga could be able to appoint a deputy governor after he is sworn in a bill senators are preparing sails through the Senate.According to Daily Nation, the bill which is being drafted by Deputy Speaker Kithure Kindiki and Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen could be tabled in the House for debate by next month.Under the 2010 constitution, a deputy governor automatically assumes office in case of death, resignation or impeachment of the governor but there is no provision for a by-election or appointment of a deputy.Murkomen has said that the law became urgent following the death of Nyeri Governor Wahome Gakuru on Tuesday through a road accident. In February then Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua succumbed to cancer in London and was succeeded by his deputy Samuel Wamathai. Wamathai, however, served the remaining of Gachagu's term without a deputy."The situation should not be allowed to continue. This bill is of importance because it will be risky for Mr Kahiga to run the county alone," Murkomen said as quoted by the Nation. The senator added that the law would strengthen the governance structure in counties.Kahiga will almost serve a five-year term as Gakuru died barely three months after he was elected the county chief in August 8 elections. It will certainly be good news for Nyeri residents who might have found it risky or even difficult for the deputy governor to steer the county alone for the next almost five years till 2022.Others who share Murkomen's sentiments include Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo who has said the law is necessary and that he had foreseen the problem when governors were being impeached by their county assemblies.
