Thika Water and Sewerage Company (Thiwasco) is in the process of launching a programme that will see sanitation situation in Gachagi slums in Kamenu improved.
This was announced on Sunday by Thiwasco Water and Sewerage Director James Ikua at Kiandutu slums during an inspection of a similar toilet project that is underway.
Ikua said that the programme that involves the construction of flush water toilets as opposed to the common pit latrines in the slum will be undertaken between the company and various stakeholders.
"Thiwasco is committed to improving sanitation in various informal settlements in Thika town. We have started it here in Kiandutu and our next stop is Gachagi slums where residents are in dire need of better toilets and clean drinking water," said Ikua.
Ikua added that they will partner with existing house owners in the slum together with the upcoming ones to make it possible to construct modern toilets.
"Ours will be for instance to ensure that every permanent residence in the slum is connected with water to make it possible to have flush-water toilets around. Same with upcoming ones," said Ikua.
He noted that the company is already constructing public toilets across Kiandutu slums which he said will be replicated in Gachagi.
Ikua said that the programme will go a long way in controlling water-borne diseases in the slums which he largely attributed to poor sanitation.
