Thika Water and Sewerage Company (Thiwasco) has unveiled a multimillion expansion plan in a bid to curb the acute water shortage being experienced by the local residents. According to Thiwasco Chairman Joseph Mukora Kimani, the firm has set aside Sh. 850 million towards the expansion program.

 Upon completion, the project is expected to generate extra 15,000 cubic meters of water daily. Thika town has been experiencing a shortage of 8,000 cubic meters of water.

The company has been supplying 37, 000 cubic meters per day, which is not sufficient to cater for the ever-growing population of the town.

The Kariminu Water Project, which will be located near Maryhill High School is expected to ease the pressure exerted on the current system. The project, which is funded by the World Bank, will kick off this year.

The management of the firm also revealed that eight boreholes have been earmarked for drilling. The boreholes will be spread across Thika including Makongeni, Kimathi Victory Plaza (CBD), Mary Hill, Bendor, Section 9 and Maki estates.

The company will also upgrade Maguguni and Gatuanyaga reticulation systems. The project will benefit residents of various areas including Kianjau, Kiandutu, Kiganjo, Muthara, and Athena
