Residents of Thogoto in Kikuyu sub-county, Kiambu County have expressed fears over increased cases of mugging in the area.
They have also pointed an accusing finger to the relevant authorites over laxity to heighten security and conduct regular patrols around Kiamburi Slum and its vicinity, an area suspected to be the source of most crime cases reported in Thogoto.
Residents of this area, whose major population comprise students from the nearby learning Institutions of including Presbyterian University of East Africa(PUEA) and University of Nairobi (UoN) Kikuyu Campus have fallen prey to this crime.
Barely a week ago, Timothy Waithaka a student from UoN Kikuyu campus was waylaid and robbed of his laptop, a phone and other valuables at around 8pm near the junction leading to the PUEA.
Residents have now urged security personnels in Kikuyu to intensify patrols in the area to curb the rising cases of crime.
Gerald Kinyua a resident of Kiamburi Slum, blamed the situation on the large number of idle youths who laze around the area till late in the evening.
“There are so many youths who are always idling around. They are of questionable character and have been linked with various cases of mugging,” observed Kinyua.
Such cases of robbery have always been reported every time these institutions hold their annual overnight events that attract huge attendants therefore providing a ripe opportunity for criminals to perpetrate their acts.
