Over 60,000 people are facing starvation in the border town of Hulugho in Garissa County.
This is as a result of their sources of water drying up due to the severe drought experienced in the region in the recent past.
The residents are now depending on water that is drawn from River Tana which is 200 kilometres away from the town, and the little water is not enough for their consumption.
The residents have lost a great percentage of their animals as well, as Mahat Muhumed Saney explains;
"As we speak, I have lost ten cows and twenty goats and I'm now fearing for my family. We do not know how we shall live in this harsh condition," said Mahat.
Another resident, Bashir Dol Omar explains how he lost his goats and sheep and calls for the government to do something about the worsening condition of drought in the region.
"I had about 200 goats and sheep but now am left with 60 of them. Most of them are weak due to lack of water and pasture. We would like the government to hear our grievances and provide for us water to sustain our lives," said Bashir.
Hulugho Sub-County Administrator Abdullahi Mohamed Gedi says the dam that the residents were relying on has dried up for the first time in thirty years.
"People in far flung areas used to converge at this dam. The current situation has affected over 60,000 people. The county government has provided two water tanks which are now serving the residents," said Abdullahi.
The National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) says that there are no cases of human death reported due to the prolonged dry spell in the region.
