Three persons were on Monday arraigned in Kangundo for allegedly breaching election laws during the August general election.

According to the Star, Cecilia Mbula, Boniface Mutungi and Stephen Okoth appeared in court to respond to charges of leaving ballot boxed open and used. The charge sheet of the trio did, however, not point out the seats that were affected following the action of the electoral officers.

The group was accused of presenting the unsecured materials to the returning officers at the National Industrial Training Institute on August 9, 2017, which is likely to have affected the outcome of the exercise. The accused were working as returning officers during the exercise, and have been arraigned at the court under 6 (J) of the Election Offences Act, 2016.

Appearing before, Kangundo senior principal magistrate Desdarius Orimba, the three denied the charges leveled against them. They were later released on a Sh300,000 bond each or Sh100,000 cash bail.

Their lawyers, Daniel Mwamba and Otieno Javana asked the court to provide accused with the witness statements and charge sheets to prepare for defense. The trio will appear in court on October 19, 2017, over the same charges.
