Police in Kikuyu on Friday arrested three men said to have been running unregistered matatu Saccos for the past one year.

According to the police, the three Saccos were not registered in the ministry of transport and have been operating with fake registration names.

Kikuyu OCPD Mutune Maweu said that fake Saccos had been reported by some matatu owners who realised later on after registering in them.

He said that it was a serious offence to operate using fake Saccos. The police boss revealed that police were able to arrest the supposed managers who have been conducting the illegal act.

He said that the three have been taking money from matatu owners who believed the Saccos were registered.

Maweu said that this was an act of fraud because they were using fake means to get money from the matatu owners.

"The three are in police custody and they will be charged for fraud and also operating as a Sacco illegally," said Maweu.

He also advised matatu owners who wished to join Sacco to be very vigilant not to fall into the traps of conmen.

Henry Kinuthia, a matatu owner who spoke to this writer says that he had once joined a fake Sacco and lost his contributions.

"I contributed money to the Sacco as usual until my vehicle got an accident and the Sacco management disappeared because they realised I needed them at that time," he added.
