The Kenya Red Cross has warned of a likely catastrophe as drought continues to ravage some counties in the country.
Kenya Red Cross Secretary General Abbas Gullet said on Tuesday unless interventions are made early, three million people could perish as a result of hunger due to the drought.
The three counties affected by the prolonged drought, he said, include Turkana, Wajir and Kilifi.
The three counties have continuously received minimal rainfall over the last one decade- hampering agricultural development and and subsequently provision of food.
"We are concerned that there are minimal intervention which have been made by both government and international agencies in ensuring the situation is contained before it spill over," Abbas said at a press conference in Nairobi.
"The little we were able to do has not been very helpful because of financial and aid constraints. The situation is too worse that quick responses need to be done."
Abbas made the remarks one week after the Kenya Meteorological Department warned that parts of North Eastern region covering Wajir will receive little rainfall when the rain season begins in March.
The Met department said other parts of the country including Western region, North Rift, Central and parts of Eastern region will get adequate rainfall to support agriculture.
