Three people have been confirmed dead after a trench they were excavating caved in on them in Murang’a town.

The deceased were among seven people who were inside the trench when the disaster struck a t11 am on Thursday.

Four were rescued and taken to Murang’a General Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries.

Robert Irungu said that he jumped to a level where he could be pulled out of the rubble adding that the trench they were digging was about 17 feet deep and that the soil had become wet due to leaking water pipes.

The County Police Commander, Naomi Ichami, said that the rescue mission had brought together the County Disaster management team and the Red Cross.

She warned constructors to adhere to laid down safety regulations while putting up buildings while anyone working in a construction site must have the appropriate working tools and protective gear.

Following the incident Murang’a County Executive Committee Member (CECM) in charge of Roads and Public Works, Engineer Amos Njoroge, has ordered tenants in the building behind the excavated trench to vacate immediately.

He added police were looking for the owner of the building to help in investigations into the incident.  The bodies of the deceased were taken to the Murang’a Hospital Mortuary.
