Three people are reported to have died after the car they were travelling in was involved in an accident along Nairobi-Mombasa Road in Athi River, few metres from a police road block on Tuesday night.
Mavoko police boss, Kizito Mutoro, who confirmed the incident told the press that the victims who were ferrying four bags of bhang' during the accident, were evading the road block which had been erected by officers from Athi River Police Station during the midnight incident.
Mutoro said the Toyota Carina that was heading towards Nairobi hit an oncoming car head on leading to death of all its three occupants as those in the other vehicle sustained injuries.
“The occupants of the vehicle had noticed the road block and were attempting to escape from the police to avoid being arrested,” said Mutoro.
He noted that two people died on spot while the third one succumbed to his injuries at Shalom Community Hospital in Athi River where he had been taken for treatment.
Mutoro said all the bodies had been moved to the hospital's mortuary and both vehicles towed to Athi River Police Station.
He said police had launched investigations into the matter.
