Three fishermen, a Tanzanian and two Kenyans have drowned in Lake Victoria during a fishing expedition near Rusinga island in Homa Bay County.

Nyang’ope Jasirati aged 30 from Tanzania, and Kenyans Martin Kieti, 41 and Joseph Kososi, 33 died when their fishing boat capsized as one of their lucky friend Dan Otieno, 38 who survived from the accident.

The four are said to have left Wadiang’a beach in Sindo town on Sunday evening and were safely sailing until when they approached Rusinga island at around 9 pm when rains started causing a heavy storm on the lake leading to the capsize.

Homa Bay County Police Commander Marius Tum confirmed the incident saying two fishermen died on the spot while another one died a few minutes later.

Mr. Tum said that the survivor and the man who died later had hanged on sides of the boat and swam towards the shore for rescue but one was overpowered by the waves and died after losing grip before sinking into the water.

“The boat broke and two fishermen immediately sank into the water. The other two managed to get hold of floating parts of the boat but one got tired and sank due to exhaustion,” said Tum.
