The hospital has successfully conducted three major operations that many did not imagine that can actually be performed in a third world country like Kenya. These are the historical surgeries that hit worldwide headlines:
1.Removal of a bullet lodged in baby Satrin Osinya's brain
Baby Satrin Osinya, 18 Months old, had a bullet lodged in his head during the 23th March 2014 Likoni Church shooting which killed his mother and five others. A team of doctors including five neurosurgeons successfully removed the bullet from his brain on Tuesday 1st April 2014. The operation lasted for 3 hours.
2. Separation of Conjoined Twins in a 23-hour Surgery
The multidisciplinary team of over fifty (50) medical specialists including paediatric surgeons, neurosurgeons, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, anesthetists and nursing teams performed the 23 hour long highly delicate surgery on 1st November 2016 at the KNH Main Theatres leading to the successful separation of the twins, Blessing and Favour. The surgery ended on 2nd November, 2016 at 5:00am. The twins were 2 years old.
3. Reattachment of a teenager's hand that had been kept in a cool box for over 10 hours
Joseph Theuri, a 17 years old teen from Kiambaa village, Kiambu County will forever remain a living testimony after Kenyatta National Hospital surgical team successfully re-implanted his limb that had been accidentally severed by a chaff cutter machine. The delicate surgery took place on 8th February 2018 and lasted over 7 hours.
